Transport Refrigeration (Reefer)
Protect the load. Mobile reefer diagnostics and repair to hold temperature and keep perishable freight compliant.
On-site, done right.
Transport refrigeration units are sophisticated mechanical and electronic systems running continuously under the harshest conditions: temperature swings, vibration, road contamination, and non-stop operating cycles. When a reefer fails, the cargo clock starts immediately. Interstate Fleet Services provides mobile on-site transport refrigeration service — we dispatch to the trailer wherever it is parked and diagnose the refrigeration unit without requiring the trailer to be towed to a shop.
IFS technicians are trained on the two dominant reefer platforms in commercial transport: Thermo King and Carrier Transicold. We carry diagnostic interface tools for both brands, enabling us to pull active fault codes, review operating logs, and read live data from the unit's controller — temperature, setpoint, suction and discharge pressures, compressor speed, and electrical parameters. This data-driven approach tells us what failed and why, eliminating the parts-shotgun approach that wastes time and money.
Our on-site reefer service covers the most common field-serviceable failure modes: setpoint and temperature differential faults, refrigerant system diagnostics and leak detection, condenser and evaporator coil cleaning and inspection, electrical fault diagnosis (sensors, wiring, relays, and circuit boards), belt and belt-drive component inspection, fuel system issues on diesel-driven units, and battery and alternator system service for electric standby units. For cargo with tight temperature requirements, we treat every reefer call as the emergency it is.
What's included
- Reefer unit diagnostics
- Temperature & setpoint faults
- Belts, sensors & electrical
- Get back to setpoint fast
Signs it's time to dial.
- The reefer unit is displaying an active alarm code and the temperature is rising toward the setpoint limit or has already exceeded it
- The unit is running but not maintaining setpoint — box temperature is drifting warm or the unit is continuously cycling without achieving target
- The unit will not start or is shutting down on a fault code shortly after startup
- Visible refrigerant frost or ice buildup on lines or coils that is not part of a normal defrost cycle
- Excessive noise — compressor knock, belt squeal, unusual vibration — that the driver has noticed during operation
- Pre-load inspection has revealed a defrost failure, a controller fault, or an electrical condition that will affect cargo temperature integrity
One call to back on the road.
Call & Dispatch
Call 1-888-589-9281 and provide the trailer location, the reefer brand (Thermo King or Carrier), the model number if visible on the unit, the active alarm codes if displayed, and the current box temperature versus setpoint. This helps us arrive with the right diagnostic equipment and likely replacement parts.
Controller Diagnostic Download
The technician connects to the reefer unit's controller using our brand-specific diagnostic tools to download all active fault codes, alarm history, and a snapshot of operating parameters at the time of failure. This gives us a factual picture of what the unit was doing before, during, and after the fault set.
Refrigeration System & Electrical Inspection
With the diagnostic data guiding the inspection, we evaluate the reported system — checking refrigerant pressures at suction and discharge, inspecting coils and condenser for blockage, testing sensors and electrical circuits, examining belts and drive components, and assessing fuel delivery on diesel-powered units. We identify the root cause rather than replacing parts on suspicion.
On-Site Repair & Temperature Verification
We perform the repair on-site — replacing a failed sensor, repairing a refrigerant leak and recharging to spec, replacing a drive belt, resolving an electrical fault, or correcting a controller configuration error. Before releasing the trailer, we confirm the unit is achieving setpoint and holding temperature stability appropriate for the cargo type.
Transport Refrigeration questions.
Does IFS service both Thermo King and Carrier Transicold units?
Yes. We carry diagnostic interfaces and service equipment for both Thermo King and Carrier Transicold. We also service units on both diesel-driven and electric standby platforms.
Can IFS recharge refrigerant on-site, or is that a shop procedure?
We can perform refrigerant leak detection and recharge in the field when the leak has been identified and repaired. We follow EPA Section 609 refrigerant handling requirements on all mobile service calls.
How quickly can IFS respond to a reefer alarm on a loaded trailer?
Response time depends on technician proximity and call volume, but reefer calls on loaded trailers with active temperature alarms are treated as high priority. Call 1-888-589-9281 immediately when you see an alarm on a loaded unit — do not wait to see if the unit recovers on its own.
Can you service multi-temp trailers with divider walls and multiple zones?
Yes. Multi-temperature units with separate evaporator zones are within our service scope. We diagnose zone-specific issues including failed evaporator fans, zone damper problems, and controller faults that affect individual temperature compartments.
What documentation does IFS provide after a reefer service call?
We provide a written service record documenting the fault codes found, the diagnosis, the repair performed, parts replaced, refrigerant added (if applicable), and the post-repair temperature verification. This documentation is important for cargo claims defense and fleet maintenance history.
